Hawthorn Berry Syrup (Ancient European Heart Tonic)

Hawthorn berries Using SRC Hawthorn Berry Syrup

Suggested Use

The traditional formula used to make SRC Hawthorn Berry Syrup recommends taking teaspoon, three times a day, when used as a heart tonic. At this use, one quart will last 128 days. Like any fruit, hawthorn syrup is more easily digested when taken on an empty stomach.

A new study gives credence to one of my favorite herbs for congestive heart failure, hawthorn. Why do I like hawthorn so much? It's extremely safe and relatively inexpensive. The drugs doctors usually prescribe for congestive heart failure - Lasix™, Lanoxin™, and ACE inhibitors - can be toxic and require that patients be carefully monitored.

In the study, the researchers found that patients taking the hawthorn extract improved their exercise tolerance by almost 11 percent, but those taking a placebo actually decreased their tolerance by 17 percent! And the hawthorn patients felt better overall, whereas the other patients reported no such increase in well-being. Clearly, this herb improves cardiovascular function and may be a safer alternative to prescription drugs.

It's best to take hawthorn in a liquid extract. I recommend SRC Hawthorn Syrup....

Some people take more than this, up to 4-6 tablespoons per day.

As a remedy for occasional sore throats, sleeplessness or digestive problems, use teaspoon or more as needed. (Note: severe or persistent digestive problems, sleeplessness or sore throats may be a sign of a serious health problem. Consult your health professional.)

Side Effects and Contraindications

Available research has found NO indications of toxicity from the ingestion of hawthorn berries. No problems have been associated with long-term use of hawthorn.

However, hawthorn can increase the effects of digitalis and other positive inotropic drugs. Do not use hawthorn while taking these substances except under the advice and supervision of your health professional.

Hawthorn is classified as a very safe herb with a wide dosage range, but because sufficient studies for these groups are not yet available, hawthorn should not be used by children, or by pregnant or nursing women.
